IIT College of Architecture
study abroad programs

Our study abroad programs are expanding each year and now encompass a wide range of options. We now offer multiple programs for both graduate and undergraduate students. Near or far, long or short, spring, summer, or fall. The College's goal is to encourage each and every student in the College of Architecture to get out of Crown Hall and far away at least one time during their IIT education.

general overview

Paris Program - The College of Architecture's main program - we conduct semester-long programs during both fall and spring semesters out of our own facility in the center of Paris. The Paris Program is geared to fourth year undergraduate curriculum, but fifth year undergrads and select graduate students are welcome to apply. Please see the tab above labeled "fourth year programs".

Exchange Programs -  We now have an exchange agreement with one of the best schools of architecture in Europe, the IUAV in Venice, Italy. This program is open to two fourth year undergrads each year and is conducted during the spring semester. We are now working on an additional exchange program and hope to initiate it in 2010/2011.

Partner Programs - IIT, and the College, work with many partner institutions around the world to vastly expand our study abroad options. The partnership agreements make for easier application, enrollment, and transfer of credits. Most of these programs can accept students for either a semester or a full academic year. The target audience is fourth year undergrads, but fifth year students and graduates are eligible. A full list of our partner institutions can be found at the Study Abroad offices website.

External Study Abroad Programs - Even if we do not have a formal agreement with a foreign program, it may still be possible to arrange a study abroad program there. Participation in an external program will probably require more research and more extensive preparation, but we can help to move the process along. The key is to start planning early and be prepared to put a little more effort into the process than is needed for the other options. In the end, these are probably the most rewarding study abroad experiences because of their independent nature.

Traveling Studios - Although the time spent abroad in traveling studios is more compressed (typically two weeks), we are trying to insure that we conduct at least one Traveling Studio each semester. These are part of the regular advanced studio offerings.  Past studios have visited Sao Paolo three times, Berlin, Seoul, Shanghai, and Mumbai.

Summer Programs - Our summer programs have grown from a single program in the summer of 2008 to three for this coming summer. These programs were originally developed for graduate students, but they have proved hugely popular among undergrads as well. This summer programs will be offered in Berlin, Paris, and Spain/Portugal.

Spring Break Trip - In March 2010 we will be conducting the College's first ever spring break trip. The trip will be open to any student in the College of Architecture, grad or undergrad. It's a pleasure to announce that the Spring Break 2010 trip will be to Japan.
