We are pleased to announce that the College of Architecture is organizing the first study abroad trip to Japan in the school's history.
The draft itinerary includes four days in Tokyo, two days in Kyoto, and a daytrip to the Ise Shrine.
The Japan trip will be open to all students in the College of Architecture, graduate or undergraduate.
Prof. Timothy Brown will conduct this trip. He has organized countless study trips at sites as varied as Korea, Turkey, Italy (top to bottom), virtually all of western Europe, parts of eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Greece, and Tunisia. He has lived in France, Tuscany, Berlin, London, Copenhagen, Barcelona, and even Alaska. His solo wanderings include Dubai, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America. He has travelled to every state in the US except Hawaii (understandable) and Oregon (Oregon?).
Isabelle David will be accompanying the group and will provide background on Japanese language, literature, and film.
preliminary details
The group will meet in Tokyo on 6 March 2010 and depart for Chicago on 14 March. Participants will be responsible for finding, booking , and paying for their own flights.
The first four days will be spent in Tokyo and its immediate environs. We will then travel to Kyoto (via bullet train) where we will spend two days. At the trip's end we will visit the Ise Shrine or other shrine site and spend a night at one of Japan's famous hot-springs resorts.
Days will be organized so as to strike a balance between group site visits and time for independent exploration, which is the most important aspect of any study travel. We will see a lot, talk about what we're seeing, and maybe do some sketching. And, naturally, we'll be devoting some time to eating.
costs
Approximate cost will be $2,000.00 based on the draft itinerary. Given the swings in airfare and costs on the ground the actual cost may be more or less than $2,000. Estimated costs are $1000 for round-trip airfare, around $25 per day for lodging at simple backpacker hostels, and $25 per day for food. Additional costs will be site or museum entry fees, and ground transportation to Kyoto. Finally, the program fee is $400.00 per person. There are no credit hours offered on the trip so there are no tuition costs.
application
Qualified fifth year students who have never participated in one of the College's travel program will have priority when reviewing applications. Graduate students in their last year will also be accorded priority consideration. All other students will be considered on equal terms; their chances based simply on the strength of their application materials.
